There are currently 2 high profile Republican contenders for the Texas Senate seat up for grabs in the 2020 primary election. The incumbent is a prohibitionist and the other is not.
John Cornyn – Prohibitionist
John Cornyn has never been a fan of cannabis. Never a man with an inclination to move towards the legalization of cannabis in any form. He’s the definition of a prohibitionist, just like the Sessions‘.
This can be noted in the letters that Cornyn has sent back via email to inquiring activists.
It is seen in the articles written about him, such as this one by the Dallas Morning News where he states “he worries about “public health consequences,” such as potential harm to young people’s still-forming brains and ill effects on pregnant women and their fetuses. ” Despite youth usage is states that have legalized marijuana have fallen according to a study published by the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics. ”
“Just to be clear we found no effect on teen use following legalization for medical purposes, but evidence of a possible reduction in use following legalization for recreational purposes,” said Mark Anderson, author of the paper.
This last year this prohibitionist also stated that the people claiming that cannabis has medical benefits reminded him of old ads. Reminded him of old ads for tobacco claiming it had medical benefits.
“There’s no shortage of people who claim that marijuana has endless health benefits and can help patients struggling from everything from epilepsy to anxiety to cancer treatments. This reminds me of some of the advertising we saw from the tobacco industry years ago where they actually claimed public health benefits from smoking tobacco, which we know as a matter of fact were false and that tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive drug, and is implicated with cancers of different kinds,” said Cornyn
Dwayne Stovall – States Rights
Dwayne Stovall hasn’t spoken much about cannabis. Nothing about it can be found on his site describing his platform.
So how could one know it’s a state’s rights issues with him? Luckily he was tagged in a post for Texas Veterans for Medical Marijuana. His response is in the image below.
As well, he was featured in the TXNORML Marijuana Policy Republican Voter Guide of 2020. His responses to their survey earlier in the year were that we should: remove cannabis from controlled substances act, allow VA doctors to recommend cannabis, allow safe banking for cannabis businesses, and end federal prohibition interference.
The choice is that of the people of Texas right now through Feb 28th for early voting, and then on Super Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
