Texas legislative session opens with heavy police presence

The Texas 87th legislative session started today with one of the lowest attendances of an opening day.

On the other hand, it is one of the largest police presences for an opening day of the Texas legislative session. DPS was present at the capitol with likely a 2 to 1 tally of police to civilians. This comes after the rioting and looting at the DC Capitol on January 6 2020 saw several groups making claims online.

DPS posted an advisory to capitol members according to a Quorum Report article. The advisory showed of two gatherings planned by pro-Trump groups while a particular statement caught legislators’ eyes. That became the cause for concern.

We will demand unfettered access to the State Capitol on par with previous sessions, and without restrictions stemming from the perceived COVID-19 situation, so that we may advocate for our legislative priorities, and advocate for the end of unconstitutional mandates and directives from state and local governments.”

The public was required to get a COVID-19 screening (free of charge) with a negative result. People were also required to wear a mask to enter the building.

Inside the Capitol

And then the inside of the capitol showed a very similar story. A very empty space compared to most legislative days. As well, the theme again, police presence.

Then, shortly after noon, the Texas House swore Rep. Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont in as the Speaker of the House. The House did so with bipartisan support. Only guests invited to the ceremony were allowed into the House and Senate galleries today.

The hot topic that overshadowed cannabis for the opening goal was a mention of alcohol-to-go. The concept became a hot item COVID-19, spurring talk of revitalizing the economy. Cannabis activists at the capitol today spoke to others on this very issue of economics. Speaking to how cannabis may be an economic savior for the Texas economy.
