Today, Texas Cannabis Collective launched its social network titled Community by Texas Cannabis Collective.

The social network which operates in a similar fashion to Facebook, will allow activists looking to change cannabis laws in Texas without having to deal with the restrictions of traditional social media owners. Community stands apart from most other networks in that its terms of service do not allow it to knowingly sell member’s data to third party groups.
This new network will allow everyone to invite their members via unique link, and by email to the network and to a member’s desired groups (similar to Facebook groups) on the network. Each group leader will all be able to set out own rules down for each group as to what can be posted and what cannot be posted. TCC wants to provide an environment where each group can allow everyone to post as they see fit, but the Hosts of each group can send out a notification to everyone in the group when they post something they feel relevant to their cause. Posts, whether they be videos that group hosts or moderators created for podcasts, articles they have written about upcoming events or news, or simply calls to action for people to call and send letters to elected officials, can get a notification that is sent out to every member simultaneously.
Texas Cannabis Collective has been working since January to find a way to get away from the confines of Facebook and traditional social media. This has been primarily due to FB’s (and other SM’s) arbitrary implementation of the vague rules that have been set forth by said social media outlets. Following that, is the FB (or social media) algorithm determining what content followers get to see and that which they won’t. In the activism sphere, the community cannot let a major corporation like Facebook, or Twitter determine what message gets to be heard about cannabis reform and which messages go to the wayside.
The Community Network will empower everyone who desires to download an app provided by the software developer we partnered with, the same way FB would work. Push notifications can be seen by web browser and the mobile app. As well, both the web application and the mobile application allow for chats between members of a group when the group chat is activated, and personal message chats between members. Groups can host live events similar to Facebook as well. Hosts of groups can even charge memberships for groups if they desire to do so, allowing groups to charge simply for access or even live events taking place within a group.
There are so many ways to find and connect with others in the community on this network when it becomes filled with members. Together everyone achieves more while our community grows stronger.
This is beneficial to us all as it gives us a unified voice across the state to easily call people to action when the legislature is in session, or even if a department is holding open comment periods/testimony. It allows everyone involved to call attention to their own content and websites when they deem necessary. And if the group’s members have the app, they will get a notification when the hosts dictate, cutting down response time by eliminating email delay and algorithm interference.
